Johannesburg - A 17-day strike against Transnet could be over by the end of Thursday as the SA Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) briefed members on a new wage offer.

Satawu general secretary Zenzo Mahlangu said provincial union leaders were informing the members on Thursday morning.

The union was hoping to have a final decision by 14:00.

Its members have been demanding a 15% increase while Transnet offered 11%.

Satawu workers started the countrywide strike against Transnet on May 10.

Its fellow union, the United Transport and Allied Trade Union (Utatu) embarked on the strike with Satawu for a few days before deciding at the end of last week to accept the 11% offer.

Neither Satawu nor Transnet wanted to give details of the new offer.

Mahlangu said "they gave us what we wanted, just in a different form".
