Cape Town - Intelligence reports show no criminal syndicates are focusing specifically on the 2010 Fifa World Cup, says deputy national police commissioner André Pruis.
Briefing the media on government's state of readiness to host the event, Pruis said that the police services were analysing syndicates on a day-to-day basis, especially those which "may" get involved in crime related to the World Cup.
A general safety and security plan for the event has also been submitted to Fifa.
Pruis said that the police had a two-pronged approach.
Firstly, 169 police stations with high violent-crime rates were being given extra monitoring and support. Secondly, police were involved in an ongoing assessment of organised criminal activity.
With regards to more specific preparations for the tournament, the police have circulated a standard check-list of safety and security projects to all host cities.
Furthermore, the police, departments of justice and correctional services have also thrashed out a plan for the possible arrest, court appearance and brief detention of offenders during match days.
The fan parks committee has also been set up and will work closely with the police says Pruis, who added that provincial safety and security summits would be held.
These will be aimed at standardising an approach to 2010 border and immigration systems as well as developing safety and security plans for fan parks, community mobilisation, public viewing facilities, team base camps, routes and tourist attractions.
