Cosatu threatens total shutdown

Johannesburg - Trade union federation the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) announced on Tuesday that it is mobilising all its affiliated unions to embark on a secondary strike next week as it seeks to intensify its public sector strike.

Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi said the unions will serve a seven-day notice of strike this Thursday.

Vavi warned that the secondary strike will totally shut down the South African economy if government does not accede to unions' demands.

He urged the government to table a new offer before Thursday next week.
