Bela-Bela - The future of PetroSA's Project Mthombo is still unknown, after the state-owned oil company refused to disclose what decision it made on the matter made over the weekend.
Project Mthombo is an initiative to build a crude refinery at the Coega Industrial Development Zone, which could create 40 000 work opportunities during the building stage.
PetroSA was going to decide this weekend whether the project would be delayed or continued as speedily as possible.
Project leader Jörn Falbe only confirmed that a decision had been made, and a recommendation passed on to Energy Minister Dipuo Peters.
"Now the rest is in her hands," he said.
One of the spin-offs of the project is the use of petroleum waste to operate a planned 800MW power station at Coega. While Mthombo would need 200MW for its own operations, the remaining 600MW could be fed into the national power grid.
