Johannesburg - Contract cleaners will from December receive a wage increase of up to 13 percent in designated areas, the Department of Labour said in a statement on Monday.
This meant that employees in metropolitan councils such as the cities of Johannesburg, Tshwane and Cape Town would be paid R11.16 per hour from the beginning of December, spokesperson Page Boikanyo said.
"As a result of CPIX for September 2008, employees in Area A will receive an increased hourly rate of R11.16 instead of R10.50 because the increase in CPIX for September 2008 exceeded 6.25 percent," Boikanyo said.
He said the sectoral determination indicated that if the CPIX was more than 6.25 percent in year three, CPIX should be utilised to determine the new rate for area A.
"The available CPIX rate as released by Statistics South Africa is 13 percent, therefore wages will increase by 13 percent in Area A," Boikanyo said.
Other places that fell in the same area included Ekurhuleni, Nelson Mandela, Emfuleni, Merafong, Mogale City, Metsimaholo, Randfontein, Stellenbosch and Weston Area.
Workers in other areas in the country would get an hourly increase of 90 percent of the Area A wages.
This worked out at R10.05.
