Pretoria - The government is concerned about road accidents that cost the economy R43bn annually, Transport Minister Jeff Radebe said on Thursday.
"The economic impact is significant," he said.
Addressing students at the first United Nations Global Road Safety Week in Pretoria, Radebe said the youth constituted a major group at risk of death and injury on the road.
Resolutions on safety were, therefore, focused on them.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the highest rate of crashes on the roads occurred amongst road users younger than 25 in the African and the Eastern Mediterranean regions.
Road accidents were also the second leading cause of death globally among young people.
Other figures showed road accidents globally disabled as many as 50 million people a year.
