Johannesburg - This week, the University of Fort Hare became the first formerly black-only university whose department of accounting has been accredited by the SA Institute of Chartered Accountants (Saica).

This accreditation will enable students at the university to take the final qualifying examinations for the chartered accountant's certificate (CA).

Fort Hare is one of two formerly black-only universities earmarked for an upliftment programme by the Association for the Advancement of Black Accountants of Southern Africa (Abasa). Various organisations, including the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), the Umsobomvu Youth Fund and the National Youth Development Agency also participated. The IDC provided sponsorship of R1.5m.

"The plan was to lure CAs from the corporate world to teach at black universities like Fort Hare and the University of Limpopo. Abasa collected funds to pay their salaries so that they could lecture at the institutions and thus receive accreditation," said IDC chief executive Geoffrey Qhena.
