Johannesburg - Support staff at the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) started a strike on Monday to press for better wages, a trade unionist said.
"The strike will take as long as they agree to our demands," said SA Transport and Allied Workers' Union (Satawu) sector coordinator Kenneth Monnana.
He said a commissioner of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) tried to get the parties to reach an agreement during a meeting on Saturday.
"But that meeting did not bear any fruit," said Monnana.
Earlier, the CAA said only 186 of its 433 workers would take part in the strike, the majority of them support staff.
Monnana confirmed that only about 200 staffers were striking.
The aviation regulator's Kabelo Ledwaba said the CAA had more than enough capacity to deal with any aircraft crash investigations.
The union was demanding a 14% wage increase, while the CAA had offered 9%, which it dropped back to its original 7% offer when Satawu refused to accept.
