Johannesburg - Workers in the car manufacturing sector will begin striking on Wednesday August 11, the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) said on Friday.
"It has never been our intention to embark on strike action but because of Ameo's (the Automobile Manufacturers Employers
Organisation) stubbornness, we are compelled to take the battle to the streets," Numsa said.
Negotiations between Numsa - representing over 31 000 workers in the automotive manufacturing industry - and Ameo collapsed on
Thursday.
Numsa were demanding a wage increase of 15%, the "scrapping" of labour brokers and six months' paid maternity leave amongst other demands.
