Johannesburg - The appointment of Transnet's group CEO was delayed because the person recommended by the company's board was not the one favoured by the ANC, Business Report said on Tuesday.
"The ANC is not telling anyone what to do," Business Report quoted African National Congress spokesperson Jessie Duarte as saying.
"All we have done is made a suggestion that because there are 30 days to go before the elections, can we just hold on with key appointments until after the elections."
She added that this would enable new ministers to make new appointments.
On Monday Fred Phaswana, the chairperson of the Transnet board, said in a statement that the rigorous selection process identified only one unanimous candidate for the appointment on time before the departure of the former chief executive, Maria Ramos.
According to Phaswana, the candidate, who had participated in the selection process, withdrew his candidature after his name was recommended by the board to the minister.
Citing an unidentified ANC source, Business Report said the ANC wanted Transnet Freight Rail chief executive Siyabonga Gama to become CEO, while the board favoured Pravin Gordhan, the SA Revenue Service commissioner.
