Cape Town - Investments worth R120bn have been mobilised by the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Programme, one third of which will be procured from local suppliers.
The budget review states the above consist of private investments in solar, wind, hydro-electric and biomass-based technologies to generate electricity.
The programme was launched in August 2011.
To date, out of 225 bids, 64 have been accepted for the procurement of nearly 4 000 MW of electricity.
As expected, the budget review states that the competitive bidding process has led to progressive reductions in the contracted supply price, from more than R3 000/kWh in the first bid to less than R1 000kWh in the third.
Most power plants will be located in rural areas and about 20 000 jobs will be created in the construction phase with another 35 000 jobs in plant operations. Most of the new employment will be in the Northern and Eastern Cape.
