Cape Town - Mike Pothier of the Southern African Catholic Bishop's Conference (SACBC) on Wednesday called on Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan to address President Jacob Zuma's sacking of Nhlanhla Nene in his 2016 Budget Speech.
In a studio interview the research coordinator of the Catholic Parliamentary Liaison office said his main concern is that the job creation targets set out in the budget is rarely ever met. "We've got used to having 8 million people unemployed. In any other country that would be a national emergency," Pothier told Fin24's Terry Bell.
He encouraged corporate South Africa to plough their huge cash piles back into the economy and to employ more people.
Pothier said that government's cost-cutting measures are already underway. For instance, the cost of the 2016 State of the Nation Address was reduced compared to last year.
