Cape Town - An extra R107m is to be pumped into the government's Kha Ri Gude mass literacy programme this financial year, Finance Minister Trevor Manuel said on Tuesday.
The programme had "exceeded expectations", he told the National Assembly in his medium-term budget speech.
Kha Ri Gude was launched in April this year with the aim of reaching more than a million of the country's estimated 4.7 million illiterate adults over the next three years.
It planned to enrol 300 000 illiterate adults for adult basic education and training this year, a figure which, according to treasury documentation, has been exceeded by 60 000.
The initial allocation to the campaign for the current financial year was R350m.
