Budget speech sparks Google search spike

Cape Town – As Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan presented his 2016 Budget Speech on Wednesday, South Africans have expressed their interest with online searches.

According to Google SA, interest was high for the budget speech.

"In the run up to the Budget Speech at 14:00 today, South Africans were searching for 'budget speech time' 1 350% more often than any other search term, and 'budget speech 2016 time' 4 800% more often than any other searches," said Mich Atagana, Communications and Public Affairs head for Google SA.

Gordhan was installed after President Jacob Zuma briefly appointed MP Des van Rooyen to the post, resulting in the rand falling dramatically to major currencies.

"Other search terms attracting interest around the budget include 'pravin gordhan qualifications', 'des van rooyen qualifications' and nhlanhla nene qualifications'," said Atagana.

Gordhan delivered a budget that he expects will re-ignite growth in the South African economy and spiked tax on alcohol and cigarettes.

He also introduced a new tax on sugary drinks.
