Alec Hogg has been attending the World Economic Forum in Davos for more than ten years, and as is tradition he received yet another crystal. On day one in Davos Alec attended the Crystal Night where he saw Leonardo DiCaprio, whom he said, is taller than he initially thought.
But on a more serious note, DiCaprio was calling for the protection of our oceans. A cause further strengthend by an earlier report which suggests that by 2050, there’ll be more plastic (by weight) in the oceans than fish.
He also spoke to the Vitality Institute’s Derek Yach about living to 150 years old, and took a selfie with Patrice and Precious Motsepe. This is day one of Alec Hogg’s Davos Diary. – Stuart Lowman
Alec Hogg: Well, here we have the Davos Diary Day One and we’re in our hotel. We’ve been back here for more than ten years to the Concordia, which is in the Promenade in the Main Road of Dorf. Remember, Davos has Dorf where the Catholics live and Platz where the Protestants live. If you have look at the map, which I’m sure you can see quite well, it gives you an outline of where we are.
We’re around this part here, which is a nice walking distance to the Congress Centre where we’ve just been. One of the things that I got this year again was a little crystal, which denotes that you’ve been coming to the World Economic Forum for ten years or more. It was also the Crystal Night because we had the Crystal Awards, including Leonardo DiCaprio who is far taller than I thought.
Lewis Pugh, my friend from South Africa who is agitating so aggressively for protection of the oceans would have loved what Leonardo had to say. He said that only two percent of the oceans in the world are being protected at the moment. In fact, only 3% of all of the money that is spent for philanthropic needs go into sustainable resources as a whole, so only a fraction of the oceans.
There was another big ocean story here today where a research report from the WEF said that if we carry on this way; by the year 2050, there will be as much (by weight) plastics in our oceans as there are fish. It’s been an interesting day today. Of course, it is only the beginning of the World Economic Forum.
We had a fascinating interview with Derek Yack – he is from the Vitality Institute – telling us that people are soon going to be living to 150. Who knows? ‘Forever’ is a prospect. We also managed to bump into quite a few people that I’ve arranged interviews with and I had a selfie with Patrice and Precious Motsepe. We’ll be putting that up onto the site and onto Twitter of course, a little later.
