This weekend, we might just have been treated to a glimpse of the old and future South Africa.
On the one hand, 72-year-old incumbent President Jacob Zuma was with the likes of Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe and Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro in Moscow. Zuma was among the 70 global leaders invited by Russia’s Vladimir Putin to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Nazi Germany’s defeat. He is one of just 30 who pitched – even North Korea’s Kim Jong-un pulled out ten days ago.
The more optimistic picture was painted by the country’s official opposition, the Democratic Alliance, where around 1 300 of its Federal Council members voted overwhelmingly for 34-year-old Mmusi Maimane to become their new leader. Maimane is a rarity among politicians, a Man of God who takes pride in his other career as a pastor.
Another high profile leader to speak openly about his relationship with God was America’s 40th and most popular President, Ronald Reagan. Sometimes it appears SA needs Divine Intervention to drag it away from chaos created by large scale mismanagement. America was in a similar position after Jimmy Carter. Who knows? Perhaps the DA did elect a future President on Sunday?

Perhaps we have a President in waiting. I hope with it will come true Christian values of anti-homosexuality, anti-abortion, promotion of true equality across all races, true appreciation for the preservation of life, through care, good health care and extended humanity, such that one day a black child born in South African has the same health care, education and economic opportunities as any other South African child.
For as long as that inequality exists, South Africa is still caught up in the after-effects of Apartheid. For as long as the majority of the unemployed in South Africa are African youth, we have a problem. And this is not saying fowl of the attempts of the likes of Dr Mandela and Mr Mbeki and the current president, however their collective attempts have proven to be of little impact…in my view purely because they have all failed to address the real problem in South Africa. That problem being in-equality.
I hope the young man can make a meaningful impact in beginning a process to unwind the additional damage done since 94, let alone the impact of the Apartheid system before democracy in South Africa.
