During a discussion last week with one of the smartest people I know, we drifted onto the chances of billionaire Donald Trump in the US Presidential Election. Once you get past the hairstyle and politically incorrectness, Trump makes a lot of sense, my friend opined. What’s more Trump is only running because the country is in big trouble which somebody needs to sort out – and urges voters to compare his track record on employment and growth with that of other candidates.
Should he make it, President Trump would have a few bridges to rebuild, Pretoria among them. In 2013 he tweeted: “South Africa is a crime ridden mess just waiting to explode.” An even tougher hurdle would be with his nation’s southern neighbour of whom he said last month: “When Mexico sends its people…..they’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime. They’re rapists…”
It’s a long way until the 2016 Election, but The Donald probably shouldn’t worry about those apologies just yet. PaddyPower has Hillary Clinton odds-on favourite to become her nation’s first female Commander-in-Chief. The Republican favourite and potentially third Oval Office Bush, Jeb, is her closest challenger at 3/1. Trump is way back in the field at 50/1.
Would be a bit like the 22/1 shot Power King winning the Durban July. Wait a minute…
