Johannesburg- Besides kids' programmes soapies seem popular among pre-schoolers according to the Television Audience Measurement Survey (TAMS).
The SAARF survey conducted between June and September 2008 reflects a sharp increase at 8pm on week days for SABC 1.Popular soapie Generations plays at this time and a similar trend in observes when Egoli airs. This viewing is largely influenced by family viewing behaviour.
The 4-6 year olds viewing patterns often mirror those of older children (7-12 years) but in lower numbers. While they watch an average of 1.5 hours the older group clock 2.3 hours.The little ones show some difference in viewing time between Sotho/Nguni homes and English/Afrikaans ones.
The first group matches the average while the second spends 1.32 in front of the TV. What they do share is dominance of morning viewing starting around 8am mid-week. Weekend viewing can start as early as 7am and they are available throughout the day.
There are no late peak times like week days. Viewership begins tapering off around 9pm on Saturdays and earlier on Sundays.
With the inclusion of the latest group TAMS has insight in 1, 6 million viewers.
