THEY'RE BACK! Two of South Africa's once-unchallenged creative leaders have made stunning comebacks at international awards festivals this year. Thanks to a single campaign, TBWA Hunt Lascaris heads the creative leader board for the first time since 2005. Its campaign for The Zimbabwean newspaper in exile provided 7 000 of the 8 050 creative points the agency has won this year, giving it a dominant position astride the creative industry - at this stage of the year. Over the whole of last year it ended in 11th position.
Another comeback has been that of Net#workBBDO Johannesburg, which is in second place so far, having slipped down to 10th over the whole of 2008.
The scores record the position after Cannes, the fourth and final of the international awards pageants we're using to evaluate South African agency creative performances. The others are Clio, The One Show and D&AD. Still to come are the local awards: the Loeries, Eagles and Ad of the Year. So although TBWA is an overwhelming leader at this stage, it could still be unseated.
Those in with a chance to top the table include both Ogilvy offices and Grey. Not normally renowned for award-winning success, Grey is also having a good year.
