Cape Town - The ministers of agriculture for South Africa and India have entered into an agreement that emphasises cooperation between the two countries in the fields of technology and trade.
The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries says in a statement that Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson signed the agreement on behalf of South Africa during the visit by President Jacob Zuma and the South African delegation to India.
The aim of the agreement is to bolster the country's scientific and technical skills, and promote trade in agricultural products, animal production and the management and conservation of biodiversity.
This would involve exchanging technicians between the two countries, the development of markets and the use of technical laboratory facilities, as well as the possibility of partnerships between the private and public sectors.
From a South African perspective, the agreement and the negotiations towards concluding a preferential trade agreement with India offer an opportunity to overcome certain problems currently experienced by local exporters of agricultural products, says the statement.
In discussion with her Indian counterpart Joemat-Pettersson raised topics such as a drastic reduction of trade tariffs, tax issues and certain sanitary and phytosanitary concerns.
