SAICA has finally announced the termination of former Steinhoff CEO Markus Jooste, one day after his death by suicide. (Sharlene Rood/News24)

The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) has finally announced the termination of the membership of former Steinhoff CEO Markus Jooste, just one day after his death by suicide.

The decision by SAICA comes despite it initially suspending Jooste's membership in mid-2019 pending the outcome of a disciplinary process that was never finalised.

In an email sent to members on 22 March, which has been seen by News24, the professional body's CEO Patricia Stock said Jooste would be stripped of his SAICA membership in the wake of his death. Jooste died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on 21 March near his home in the Western Cape town of Hermanus.
