Just 30km outside Cape Town, a factory in Blackheath is turning old milk bottles and other recycled plastic into new toys.
Hope Sonic started operating 10 years ago, and it employs over 180 people, mostly women, from surrounding communities like Happy Valley and Mfuleni.
Co-founder Nilam Naran has a history in the toy business – first as a retailer – and recalls the vuvuzela craze in the early 2010s that got him "intrigued" by toymaking.
