Lightning kills an estimated 264 people in South Africa every year, and this number could be higher due to under-reporting, according to the South African Weather Service (SAWS).
However, a new partnership with French firm Meteorage will help improve the safety of people, animals and infrastructure, the SAWS said in a statement on Wednesday.
Noting the danger that lightning poses to humans, the SAWS said:
